What is bokeh and how to achieve it

by Tanya Puntti

What is Bokeh

Bokeh is an adaptation from a Japanese word meaning blur. In photography this term is used to describe the quality of the areas in the picture which are not in focus.

Bokeh usually works best when taking a close up picture of your subject. Experiment with different positions. Photographing slightly into sun rays can result in wonderful Bokeh background patterns as seen in the caterpillar photograph below. Different lenses often result in different Bokeh patterns. ie some are more rounded patterns, while others hexagonal.
